New 'Phishing' Scam
Phishing refers to fraudulent attempts by criminals to obtain information on your credit and debit card numbers and identity details. Most people are aware of the use of email in doing this, but a new scam has targeted government and Defence employees, as well as other groups.

This scam involves an email being sent as if it was from a person's Credit Union or Bank. The email advises the customer that due to recent suspicious activity on their Visa Card, it has been deactivated.

This time though, rather than ask the customer to click on a 'link' and then enter their card details, the reader is asked to telephone a toll free number which connects to an automated system to reactivate their card. When the call is answered, the customer is requested to enter their card number, CVV number (the last three digits appearing on your signature panel) and PIN. After these are entered, the customer is told their card is now 'reactivated'. However, what the customer doesn't realise is that the information they have just provided is sufficient for accessing their account.

Defcredit will never send you an email advising that your card has been deactivated and can be reactivated by contacting us and we will never request you to enter your PIN or CVV. If you telephone us to activate a new card, you will have to enter your card number to an automated system, but NOT your CVV or PIN. If Defcredit ever needs you to verify any of your Visa Card transactions we will not ask for any of your Visa Card details as we already have them. The only information we will ask for will be in order to identify you personally and if we supply a toll free number it will be
1800 033 139.

If you do receive an email requesting you contact a toll free other than 1800 033 139 please do not respond. Instead call 1800 033 139 so that we may investigate to what is in all likelihood an attempted fraud.
