Handy insurance hints
Avoid under-insuring
Many people do not realise that they are under-insured until they experience a significant loss. Saving a few dollars on premiums can be costly in times of real need, so it is important to correctly calculate the value of the items you are insuring.
Keep an inventory
Develop a list of all your valuables (on a room-by-room basis for contents insurance) and calculate the replacement value. That way, you have a handy inventory for checking your insurance cover and a complete record of items in case of a claim. Photographs or video footage of valuables is also a good idea.
Regularly review your policies
Make sure that the policy you have reflects the true value of what you are insuring, and that you have not forgotten to include any new items. For example, any renovations or major purchases should be taken into account each year when the time comes to renew your home building or contents policy.
